West Coast Eats: Give a Man a Fish (Taco)

DATE: Summer 2015
LOCATION: Don Bravo

Give a (wo)man a fish taco, she'll or he'll eat for a day in La Jolla. Hands down, the #1 food staple I was most looking forward to eating in SoCal were tacos. Especially (fried) fish tacos. On our last day in San Diego, we spent a beautiful, sunny day at La Jolla Cove. As we left this beautiful blue slice of paradise, we needed to grab something to eat before we hit the road for our next stop on our West Coast road trip. A little research showed us that Don Bravo was voted to have one of the best fish tacos in San Diego.

Don Bravo is a small, shack-like restaurant with a few tables on the inside, and a bar stand outside with a distant water view. Surprised how extensive their menu really was, it was almost overwhelming deciding on what to get; from their tacos, enchiladas, burritos, tostadas, tortas, and more! Sticking with simplicity, I ordered 3 fried fish tacos and 1 pork adobada taco. There was a bar for extra fixins of lettuce, onions, peppers, cilantro, various salsas and hot sauces. The pork taco was decent, but I was definitely happier with the fish tacos. The fillings and toppings were mediocre at best and quite inferior to the fresh, excellent quality of the beer battered fish. My taste buds were very pleased by the stand out fish, but disappointed by the boring fillings.

Just like how the restaurant itself looks, Don Bravo's food is just simple, no fuss but good. Not worth it to drive out there with a mission solely to eat at Don Bravo, as I'm sure San Diego is filled with many other delicious fish tacos stands closer to the beach areas. However, if it is on your way, the fried fish is the way to go.

Bottom Line: Nothing more, nothing less. Fresh and great quality fried fish (tacos). The fish itself won't disappoint but the fillings might. Extensive menu selection and prices are also great, so it's worth a stop if you happen to be in the area. Just a good, quick cheap eat.

Happy Noshing, Jeanne
