West Coast Eats: Go Go Now, to Hash House A-Go-Go

Welcome to another chapter of my West Coast Eats mini-series, the San Diego edition. Several years ago, I remember watching an episode of Man vs. Food. Adam Richman went to Hash House A-Go-Go in Las Vegas. I had been dying to go there and check out it, and even though I had gone to Vegas twice within the past few years, never had the chance to venture out there to eat at. So I was really excited and determined to eat at Hash House A-Go-Go once I learned there was a San Diego location!

A hearty brunch at Hash House was the perfect solution to fuel up for a big day of walking around and doing our tourist thing. Knowing how huge the portions were going to be, we decided to share Andy's Sage Fried Chicken Benedict - fresh split biscuit with fresh tomato, spinach, smoked bacon, griddled mozzarella, chipotle cream, scrambled eggs served with mashed potatoes. This was the ideal portion for 2 people to share. Our stomachs were full from this mountain of comforting food, but our gluttonous-selves wanted a 2nd plate of such yumminess. But we didn't go overboard and stopped ourselves because we knew we wouldn't have the resources (no fridge in the hotel) or time to eat a doggie bag of leftovers.

The chicken was plump and crispy, while the mashed potatoes and biscuits were buttery goodness. The chipotle cream is the rainmaker of this dish. Copious amount of chipotle cream ensures the chicken is well moistened and flavored (this is not to say the chicken is dry though, it is moist but the chipotle cream just makes it tastier). This plate was every bit as good as the photos lend it to be and more. The chicken, the chipotle cream, the mashed potatoes... what more could you ask for? This is not your typical diner food. It's freshly cooked and presented with care.

As if we needed anything more to indulge in, the mister ordered the Caramel All Over Mocha while I drank the Famous Smores Mocha. The caramel mocha was a bit misleading looking on the menu. It's put in a tall glass, which had us thinking this would be an iced coffee drink. We asked the waitress for a straw, which was not provided and we soon understood why. It was actually hot coffee, not iced. Despite the confusion, it was still a good caramel mocha drink.

As for my Famous Smores Mocha, I wasn't quite sure how to attack this decadent drink. I used a spoon to wade through to the coffee, as this mug was oozing and dripping with gooey marshmallow and chocolate drizzles. It was quite sticky and messy to drink, but still enjoyable. We were even able to get to-go cups to further enjoy our mochas after we left.

Bottom Line: Hash House A-Go-Go has me wanting to go back for more. Simply familiar food that's warm and comforting but definitely not understated. You'll want to dissect into Andy's Sage Fried Chicken Benedict. Try any one of the coffee drinks that catches your eye if you're looking for extra indulgence.

Happy Noshing, Jeanne
